Your feature article on animation in the Desktop Media section last month (issue 3-12) highlights the best of a traditional magazine format and computer interactivity. The magazine "pages" emphasized the article's content while the interactive graphics expand on the static content in the text. While reading, I found myself focusing on the article content, and running graphics enhanced my insights.
Jesse Silverglate, Miami, Florida
The computer animation feature really wowed me, especially the Peter Gabriel video. Besides being very enjoyable, this section capably used videos to educate.

TEXT FILE FORMATTING
I notice many text files on NautilusCD are in .DOC format; not too many in .WRI format. Since everyone who has Windows also has Windows Write, why not format all text files to open as .WRI files?
Rand Martin, Lacey, Washington
SCREEN-SIZE QUESTIONS
I run in 800X600 resolution and I notice that I have to scroll through most of your text files when I access them with your media viewer. Why not increase the size of NautilusCD to take up the whole screen? Then you could make your viewer bigger, too.

TECHNICAL Q&A
DISPLAY EXTENDED TEXT WINDOW
The new interface is nice but when I select the Display Extended Text icon, I get a window without any scroll bars or a maximize button. If I drag the frame to resize the window, I do get a bigger window but the text doesn't expand to fill the window. I just get a lot of blank space. This makes it kind of hard to read the entire article.

Windows UnArchive (WUNA) is used to extract and decompress files from ZIP and ARJ format archives. It replaces both command-line DOS unarchivers and Windows-based front end programs for those utilities.
The NautilusCD Disc Index makes use of a custom version of WUNA to provide "built-in" unzipping.

CLEAN-UP
Repair infected areas on your system with CLEAN-UP (CLEAN), a virus disinfection program for the IBM PC and compatibles.
VSHIELD
The best anti-virus defense is prevention. Use VSHIELD to
prevent a virus from infecting your IBM PC or compatible computer. VSHIELD searches the PC for known computer viruses in memory, the partition table, the boot sector, system files, and itself. It then installs itself as a Terminate-and-Stay-Resident (TSR) program and scans all programs before allowing the system to execute them.

How to "Read" a Multimedia Story

For New Users
Subscriber Guide
Each NautilusCD article includes a variety of icons; each icon type opens or "expands" its multimedia story component.
Let's begin with text:
Graphics add a lot to a story.
When you see an image icon like the one on this cartoon, try it.
See? The Media Extension button expanded the picture!
Now, let's add sound. There are three types of audio: digitized sound files, CD tracks and MIDI.
And NautilusCD takes advantage of MPC's MIDI capability.

You'll see three more media types making use of "extension" buttons throughout an article:
When it's important that you have access to files or applica-tions directly on the disc, look for this folder icon.
Occasionally you'll see an icon like the one below denoting a special Link form. You can open it, fill it out and use your modem to send it to us electronically.
(For more on the Link facility, see the Connect with NautilusCD article elsewhere in this Subscriber Guide department.)
Finally, digital video plays an increasingly important role in multimedia communications. To view movies within stories, just click the icon with the film strip on it.

To retrace your steps, you could click on any of those BackTrack buttons to move back up through the magazine, level by level. (FYI: If you click and hold any BackTrack button you'll see all the pages you could access from its level. Give it a try!)
Maybe page-by-page is more your style. If so, use the Right and Left arrow buttons at the bottom of each page, or the arrows on your keyboard.
If you wish to move to a specific page, click the "Page __ of __" listing, below left. Then enter a

But perhaps the most fun way
to "get around" the Magazine is to use the Browse Window: Click Browse, below. (Go ahead! Once
it's open, place it in the space below and keep reading.)
See the image of this page in the window? Experiment with the controls: use the Slide Bar; try the Forward and Backward arrows; or just click the Play arrow and let it rip! When you find the page you're looking for, use "Open Page" to access it.
With all these exciting ways to get around NautilusCD, you'll have no problem finding the articles and content you want to access easily and quickly. So what are you waiting for? This month's array of articles is just a button click away!

In addition to the resources and information published through-out the magazine, there are thousands of directories and files to explore on this CD ROM.
The NautilusCD Disc Index is the standalone application that makes it possible to do so.
Click the Tools button found on the bottom of each page to open the Tools Palette, then select Index (as highlighted, above).
Search for any subject or item on the disc. Open it. Copy it to your hard drive. Print it. Or access the Index Help files for assistance (and more complete instructions).
Scroll through the Index at File or Directory level; see what's in each listing plus its path name and basic information such as type and size. Often there's a full description with important information on registration, upgrades and more.
Explore! The Index provides a world of capabilities not available in the magazine.

Subscriber Guide
Built into every NautilusCD disc is an electronic communications package we call Link. With it
--and your modem--you can connect with NautilusCD to send a subscription form, send comments or suggestions to the editors, seek technical support or order products.
You can open Link from the Tools Palette by clicking the Tools button at the bottom of any page, or from the Startup screen.
Many subscribers regularly send Link messages with comments and suggestions. We read every one, often making content decisions and even magazine enhancements because of them.
Each month we select a few to publish as Letters to the Editor. Turn the page to see this issue's collection, then send in your own.

(The story below is excerpted from a Newsbytes News report. For this story and others, see this month's Newsbytes reports.)
25% OF ALL NORTH AMERICAN FIRMS REPORT DATABASE BREACHES
About one quarter of North American organizations responding to a recent survey have seen their databases corrupted or tampered with over the past two years.
Hollywood films might lead one to think first of teenage
hackers as the major hazard, but only about 23 percent of the incidents involved an outsider.
The bigger threat was inside, with 30 percent of reported incidents involving malicious or greedy actions by an employee.
The worst reported cases cost the affected organization as much as $1 million.

Certain additional pieces of software are needed to add functionality to your computer. Whenever you add a new card or device to your system, you need to install the driver that controls the device.
Drivers are small software programs that allow Windows to talk to your specific hardware. Without the correct drivers, you would have a very difficult time reading text on your screen, hearing .WAV files and accessing your CD ROM drive.
Frequently companies issue new drivers to solve problems and add features. When they do, you should install the new driver to take advantage of improved performance. Look to NautilusCD to stay current.

We provide the latest versions of popular drivers to help our subscribers get the most out of their systems. Maybe you'll find an updated driver for your sound card here, or perhaps a new video driver to improve video performance on your PC.
Be sure, however, to install only those drivers appropriate to your system; in other words, one manufacturer's drivers will not necessarily run another manufacturer's hardware.
To install a new driver, follow the manufacturer's instructions. Often installation programs are provided; if not, you'll need to

Previously, Dr. Torello discussed the three components of human memory: sensory, short term and long term. Also included were several experiments that vividly illustrated just how the various memory types work.
As you may recall, sensory memory is the first stage in our three stage memory process and lasts for about two seconds. Tap your fingers against your desk. Notice when you stop tapping how the sensation fades away? At first you can recall the actual feeling of the tapping, but later you can only remember that your desk was tapped.
Although short-lived, sensory memory is powerful. Because it does last several seconds, we are able to organize the incoming stimuli based on previous sensory experiences. Have you

ever smelled an odor and found yourself recalling a certain event from your past related to that smell? What about a song that seems to take you back in time?
People make sense of the vast amount of sensory input with which they are constantly surrounded by using a variety of strategies that include feature detection, analyzing situational context, and recognition of previously encoded patterns.
Only when transformed into patterns of images or sounds can information enter short-term memory.
Short term memory was discussed in part one of this article as was long term. It must be noted, however, that not all researchers agree with this multi-storied view of memory. In 1972 F.I.M. Craik and R.S. Lockhart proposed a memory model that suggested that what is remembered is not determined by where it is stored but, rather, how completely incoming information is analyzed.
Most of us would very much like to improve our memory retention capabilities. We have the practically unlimited ability to remember. How, then, can we take full advantage of this fact?

Mnemonics are generally defined as a systematic procedure for improving one's memory. There are several different mnemonic methods; each of which can be used to help in the storage and recall of information.
The method of loci mnemonic approach is useful when you want to learn a list of items. This is accomplished through the use of a familiar place and by mentally placing each item to be remembered in a certain area within that place.
Another mnemonic device is the keyword method. This method is used extensively in schools where students are asked to associate new words or concepts with similar sounding cue words.

Through the use of the method of loci, a twelve item grocery list becomes much easier to recall.

Chain mnemonics (or linking memories) connect the first item to be memorized with the second, and the second with the third, and so on. A well known American example is the old "Thirty days has September..." rhyme.
What all these mnemonic methods have in common, of course, is that they try to make the new information meaningful to the subject. They enable you to compare information to previously encoded memory structures or, as they are sometimes called, schemata.
The above mentioned study illustrates the importance environment has on a person's memory. This applies towards a person's mental mind set as well. For example, if a student always eats a bowl of frosted cereal roughly one hour before a

certain class and always sits in a certain seat, then that student should be sure to eat a bowl of frosted cereal roughly one hour before class and should also sit in the same seat on the day of the class test. This won't ensure an A, of course, but it has been proven to make a difference in a student's ability to recall specific, class-related facts.
The memory retention method most of us have used (and many of us have hated) throughout our lives is rote memorization. This process can be made easier by using part learning, where only a short segment of a larger
whole is examined at a time, and
distributed practice, where a person studies a given subject over an extended period of time rather than attempt to "cram" all of the information into long-term memory all at once.
And now for our last experiment. You should close your eyes and try to recall the twelve item grocery list using the method of loci. Chances are you'll be able to bring to the front of your mind most of them. In fact, you'll probably be able to recall most of that particular list, in order, for a long time to come.

The "Wonderful Problems of
Fizz & Martina Kit" gives you everything you need to turn your students into expert cooperative problem solvers.
The centerpiece of the kit is a video, which stars Fizz and
Martina. While students watch the story, they're on the alert for any numbers that may prove helpful in solving the problem that's about to emerge. The video is only part of the activity.
After the short story, the video is stopped and the students
work in learning teams to solve the problem and talk math.
Watch the movie below to see Fizz & Martina demonstrate how the activity works in the classroom.

Adobe Acrobat continued...
Although a document designed to be presented as printed pages can be easily converted to an electronic document using Acrobat technology, the document pages, when viewed on a computer screen, may be difficult for the viewer to use.
The use of color, which may not be practical in a printed document because of cost considerations, can be used to great advantage in electronic documents at no additional cost.
The design of an electronic document must also consider the way in which the viewer will move through the document.
In a printed document, you can rapidly move across a wide range of pages simply by turning to the desired page. You can look up something in an index or table of contents, and then go directly to that page, or simply leaf through the pages to find what you want.

Adobe Acrobat continued...
In an electronic document, this random-access capability must also be available. While an index or table of contents in a multi-page printed document is not a necessity, it is vital in the same document if viewed electronically.
Acrobat technology has given computers the capability to communicate documents and their contents. And just as producing documents on the computer often requires the use of more than one tool, to take full advantage of this new communication capability a variety of technologies and tools will need to be used.

The critically acclaimed group Celestial Navigations continues to challenge the imaginations and touch the hearts of their fans and followers through their unique symphonic stories. The spark for this interactive partnership between drama and music originated when Geoff Levin, a songwriter and rock recording artist, first saw Geoffrey Lewis performing original monologues on stage.
The interaction between storyteller and audience captured both Levin's attention and his imagination, and the idea
of creating a vivid storytelling experience set to music was born
Celestial Naviations provides a story in audio or video format each month here on NautilusCD.

For me, being able to capture the landscape's moods is as much art as it is craft. There are many different ways to record the essence of a place on film. The magic of landscape photography is to turn what I see into an interesting image using a creative eye and good photographic technique.
So what is it about landscapes that captivates me? I guess it's that it's constantly changing.

Changing Landscapes continued...
Where water, land and sky meet, the scenery can seem new and different every day. After a storm, a lake can be the scene of a murder mystery, but by first light of dawn it can become a safe haven for local fishermen.
To me, nature is never boring.

Changing Landscapes continued...
Photographing nature is something I find very restful, except when I'm hurrying to catch the last rays of a glorious sunset and I can't find film and lenses fast enough! Stopping to appreciate nature's beauty in all seasons helps me relax and gives me back a sense of perspective.
I must admit I've learned a thing or two doing landscape photography. One is that light is everything. Taking photographs in interesting light, or being able to manipulate the available light, is rule number one.

Desktop Media
The capabilities of desktop publishing (DTP) software let anyone with a personal computer access the "power of the press." This ongoing tutorial, designed by page-design guru and author Steve Morgenstern, will help you get started in the exciting world of DTP.
In this third installment for NautilusCD, we'll use text and graphic tools to experiment with newsletter banner designs.
THE PROJECT SO FAR
DTP can be used to prepare anything from simple one-page flyers to professional-quality magazines, books and catalogs. For our tutorial project, we're creating a promotional newsletter for a small business.

CREATING AN ALL-TEXT BANNER
Designing a newsletter banner is the perfect opportunity to use those cool, decorative typefaces that look silly when used for run-of-the-mill text.
Entering the newsletter banner text, we'll learn how to specify typeface and type style, type size and position on the page.

SHOULD WE ADD A GRAPHIC?
While magazines usually stick with all-type banners (often over full-page photos), it's not unusual to see newsletter banners incorporating graphic images that reflect the content.

Acrobat allows you to distribute a highly designed document in electronic form so that your readers can see it as you designed it, even if they don't have the same fonts you have and even if they're using a different type of computer. It's easy to find applications for distributing conventional printed documents using Acrobat.
ELECTRONIC CONSIDERATIONS
There are challenges to this new method of communication, however. Documents intended to be presented electronically have special considerations.

However, those noises, PC audio files, are much less sophisticated, much, much smaller, and a whole lot worse sounding than their music-store-CD cousins.
As 486's replaced 286's and Mac SEs gave way to Quadras, the quality of these PC sounds became a great deal better. WAV formats are the standard on computers
running Windows, but sound on a computer can take many formats including .AIFs, SNDs and Mac "System 7" sounds, to name a few varieties of digital audio.
LOTS O' SOUNDS
ROMs are an excellent means to archive and retrieve digital sounds. So now we have a product like NautilusCD with Redbook, PC audio, and MIDI data all mixed in. Just remember:
*A stereo CD player can play the Redbook tracks.
*A computer with a ROM drive can play digital audio files and, with external speakers or headphones, the Redbook tracks, as well.
*To use MIDI files you need to have a sequencer, or at least a sound card with a MIDI chip.

If you perused the Audio Overview on the previous pages, you now know that audio in the computer world can take a variety of forms.
Probably, the best place to start--the best place to get your ears wet--is in digitizing audio. This step-by-step interactive tutorial was created by Peter Fitzpatrick.
Built around Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge digital audio software, this first installment gives you a look at the basics:
*Hooking up the hardware to digitize audio
*Setting basic recording levels
*Editing your audio

Music & Sound
Born in Eisenach, Germany, Johann Sebastian Bach was the patriarch of a family renowned for over two centuries for producing musicians of the highest order.
J.S. Bach wrote two sets of 15 sinfonia, also called inventions or symphonies, for his son's study of the clavier. These delightful miniatures are both clever examples of imitative counter-point and charming etudes for the intermediate pianist. This month's MIDI Connection features the second set, which contains three-part counterpoint.
To learn more about Bach and his compositions for the clavier, we urge you to review "The Well-Tempered Klavier" featured in the MIDI Connection on the October '93 edition of NautilusCD.
Listen to several selections of Bach's Sinfonia below.

An ongoing demand in our production area is for music or sound to accompany "Flying Logos." You know, the corporate logo that has been rendered in a 3D animation package complete with multiple light, intended to come spinning in at the beginning of a presentation. But without some sort of audio support, it would look silly. This month's Sound Bytes features nine such sounds.
The "Flying Logos" collection consists of 8- to 15-second compositions composed with motion in mind.

Sound on a computer seems to mystify most users. What are the differences between CD audio, MIDI, and digital audio? Read on and we'll try to demystify the world of digital audio.
CD OR REDBOOK AUDIO
Let's start with CD audio. When compact discs were being invented, a number of important folks (like Sony and Philips) got together and agreed on a single standardized way to store digitally recorded sounds.

"Red" CDs
The standards were published in a book with a snappy red cover. Henceforth, in the CD business, if you refer to audio tracks on a disc, you usually call them "Redbook" tracks. Redbook audio discs can be played on all stereo system-type CD players, or on properly equipped computers.
DEMYSTIFYING MIDI
What about MIDI? It's actually less confusing than you might think. MIDI (Music Instrument Digital Interface) is a hardware/software scheme thought up, originally, as a way for a musician to connect several keyboards together and use them all in a performance. You only have to play a single keyboard but you have access to a number of instruments, playing them remotely.

Audio Overview continued...
MIDI information--what we call the information passed from keyboard to keyboard--is not sound at all, but lots of numbers acting as instructions.
A MIDI keyboard connected to your computer can record every keystroke in real-time, capturing not only the note lengths and pitches but a reasonable amount of the musical expression as well.
Remember... MIDI isn't sound, it's a recorded performance. A MIDI file is of no use if you don't have a MIDI instrument hooked up to a PC or a sound card with a MIDI chip on it. (If you have a MPC standard machine, your sound card will have a MIDI synthesizer chip.) If you can't output it, unfortunately, it's not very much fun.
DIGITAL AUDIO
With advances in sound cards and MPC technology, your computer does more than display text--it makes noise, too.
